We are looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our team through an industrial PhD program in collaboration with EPFL. The candidate will be fully embedded in EDWATEC while being jointly supervised by a professor at EPFL and following the standard doctoral curriculum.

Your tasks:

• Conduct cutting-edge research and development on next-generation erbium-doped photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
• Design and simulate advanced photonic devices, including broadband erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers and on-chip lasers
• Explore novel nanofabrication techniques for extended wavelength operation and bandwidth enhancement
• Develop and characterize erbium-doped mode-locked and femtosecond lasers on chip
• Perform nanofabrication work in EPFL cleanroom facilities and contribute to process development
• Design and build experimental setups for optical characterization of PIC devices
• Contribute directly to EDWATEC’s R&D roadmap and customer-driven projects
• Participate in international conferences, workshops, and trade shows, representing the company

Your profile:

• Master’s degree in physics, photonics, or electrical engineering, with an excellent academic track record
• Strong background in electromagnetics, optics, and photonics fundamentals
• Experience or strong interest in photonic integrated circuits, lasers, or nanofabrication
• Familiarity with simulation tools is a plus
• Hands-on mindset with strong problem-solving skills and motivation to work at the interface of research and industry
• Excellent proficiency in English; strong communication and teamwork skills
• Eligibility to enroll in a PhD program at EPFL

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Application Engineer to join our team and contribute to our product development.
Your tasks:

What You'll Do

• Understand the customer requirements and challenges on the application side and translate them into product specifications and solutions and hereby contribute to joint R&D and product development projects.
• Lead the system-level assembly of optical amplifier and laser products.
• Lead the PIC packaging and photonic module assembly, including solutions for thermal management and mechanical robustness.
• Lead product reliability testing in accordance with optical communication industry standards.
• Collaborate closely with the technology team to drive the development of cutting-edge products aligned with the company's vision.
• Participate in trade shows, supporting product demonstrations and representing the company

Your profile

• Solid technical understanding of optical transceivers, their markets, and applications at both system and device levels.
• Post-graduate industry experience in optical communications is strictly required.
• Strong passion for hands-on technical work and problem solving ; resourceful and intrinsically motivated to continuously learn.
• Ph.D. or master's degree in engineering, optics, or physics, with a proven track record of relevant industrial experience.
• Excellent proficiency in English, with strong communication and collaboration skills.

EDWATEC SA is a high-tech startup founded in 2023 and a spin-off from EPFL. Our proprietary Erbium-doped photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology enables on-chip optical amplification and lasing. By replacing legacy optical amplifiers with our highly compact, high-performance, and scalable photonic integrated amplifiers, we create novel opportunities for various applications, such as optical interconnects for AI datacenters, autonomous driving, optical communication for space, quantum computing, optical metrology and sensing, long-haul communication, and more. We target a wide range of markets with significant economic potential, from data communication and space applications to optical metrology and fiber sensing.We are looking for two motivated interns to join our team and contribute to our product development. The duration of the internship is minimum 6 months.

Your tasks:‍

• Conduct optical tests and measurements of PICs
• Contribute to designing and building optical test and measurement setups to characterize PICs
• Contribute to IT tasks, data acquisition, and design coding
• Collaborate with the technology team to drive the development of cutting-edge products or services aligned with the company's vision
• Participate in trade shows to assist with product demonstrations and represent the company

Your profile:‍

• You must have a passion for hands-on technical work and problem solving, be resourceful, and intrinsically motivated to continuously learn
• Bachelor (BSc) or master's degree in engineering, optics, or physics
• Solid understanding of basics of optics & electronics. practical optics/photonics experience
• Must have excellent skills in Python programming
• Excellent proficiency in English, French is a plus; strong communication and collaboration skills
• Must have: Residence and work permit in Switzerland
